What are vasectomies (vascetomy, visectomy)?A vasectomy is an operation that makes the male patient permanently sterile, he can no longer make a woman pregnant after a visectomy (vasectamy) operation. The operation is sometimes also called vesectomy. For women it is called a tubal ligation (litigation). This operation is the most effective birth control - but of course it is more or less permanent and cannot easily be reversed so it is only after much consideration one should go through with this. Vasectomy reversal can be done though, but with difficulty. Only 0,15% of all couples get pregnant after the first year. You should consider whether or not you want to be sterile or not because of the difficulties in reversing the vascetomy operation. You should not make a vasectomy if you are afraid of complications such as infections or bleeding, these are not common but can occur in some cases. The vasectemy operation is made by a professional at a doctor’s office or at a clinic. A vasectomy is a minor operation and you are awake during the whole procedure which is done in a clinic where you will be a day patient. The vasectemy operation itself takes about 30 minutes and is not in any normal circumstances painful in any way. You may be given a mild sedative, but that is mainly to make you relaxed. It is only when the doctor is injecting the anesthetic into the skin of your scrotum that you may feel some mild pain. Afterward the operation, you should not feel any pain at all. Vesectomy failureA vasectomy operation can fail, but the failures of these operations are rare. It is less than 1% risk that the procedure will fail. The operation can fail if the tubes are not correctly blocked during the operation. Sometimes the ends heal themselves so that sperm can travel trough. A vasectemy operation should include doctor’s fees, counseling, medications, clinic fees and a checkup afterwards which includes a sperm count. The cost of the vasectemy is also different depending on which doctor you choose to use. The clinic or doctor can tell you in advance how much the vasectomy will cost and it is wise to obtain a quotation of the cost from more than one clinic prior to your deciscion of where to have the vascetomy performed.
